Prosecutors have asked Park Yong-chul, the head of Ganghwa County in Incheon, to invalidate his election, who is accused of campaigning illegally ahead of last year's general election.
In a trial for violating the Public Official Election Act held at the Incheon District Court, the prosecution asked Park to fine him 1 million won.
From March to April last year, Park is accused of visiting the homes of the heads of the Council of Strengthening People's Power several times as a city council member and campaigning illegally for the candidate of the same party's National Assembly.
County Mayor Park claimed that he visited the heads of the People's Power Council because he was close to them and that he did not fall under the election campaign.
Elected officials lose their jobs if they are sentenced to a fine of more than 1 million won for violating the Public Official Election Act.
