When the European Union (EU) confirmed the tariff rate imposed on Chinese electric vehicles at a maximum of 45.3% local time on the 4th, China strongly protested.

"China resolutely opposes Europe's unfair and unreasonable protectionist practices and anti-subsidy tariffs imposed on Chinese electric vehicles," the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said in a statement posted on its website, criticizing the move for "seriously violating World Trade Organization (WTO) rules and obstructing normal international trade order."

He then warned that it would adversely affect China-EU trade and investment cooperation and global joint efforts to cope with climate change.

The Commerce Department also urged the EU to return to the right path to resolving trade conflicts through negotiations, saying tariffs would only hinder Chinese companies from investing in Europe.

"China will also take all necessary measures to firmly protect Chinese corporate interests," he added.

In a statement, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in the EU also expressed strong dissatisfaction with the EU's push for protectionist measures and urged "to properly deal with friction and differences through dialogue."
In a separate position,
Chinese electric vehicle companies also complained that the move was unfair.
