Prosecutors have asked for four months in prison for Oh Jae-won, a former professional baseball player who was additionally charged with receiving methamphetamine from an acquaintance.
The prosecution asked for this at a final hearing held at the Seoul Central District Court today (10th).
In his closing statement, Oh said he would never touch drugs that harm society again and said he was sorry for causing a stir.
Oh's lawyer explained that Oh was forced to take sleeping pills due to his compulsion to keep his position as a main player and insomnia when he was a professional baseball player.
He also said he would deeply reflect on the wrong behavior and humbly accept any punishment, but appealed to consider whether treatment is needed to lower recidivism rather than severely punish drug offenders.
Oh was put on trial in November last year on charges of receiving about 0.2 grams of methamphetamine from an acquaintance, identified only by his surname Lee.
Separately, since November last year, he has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison in the first trial for taking methamphetamine 11 times in a year, receiving sleeping pills through acquaintances, or stealing acquaintances' names to purchase sleeping pills.
