As North Korea continues to spray garbage balloons, it has been confirmed that some balloons are equipped with location tracking devices and GPS.

There are concerns that North Korea may intentionally attempt to attack by using the balloon's location, and the military is analyzing whether it is technically possible.

Reporter Kim Dae-gyeom's report.

A garbage balloon sent by North Korea flies over the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul.

After a while, the gunpowder explodes and piles of garbage are scattered in the air.

North Korea's provocation, which began with filth balloons in May, was a method of detonating a bag loaded with cargo at a fixed time with a heat timer.

For this reason, military authorities have mainly been watching for casualties or fire risks that may occur during the fall.

[Lee Sung-joon / Joint Chiefs of Staff (last 7th): The heating timer attached to the garbage balloon activates the heating wire in the process of removing the load, but if there is a substance that catches fire, it may cause a fire.]

However, it was confirmed that the garbage balloon collected by the military was equipped with a location tracking device and GPS.

It is known that it is only attached to some balloons due to lack of financial resources, and the South Korean military believes that North Korea is accumulating experience and data by looking into the route of movement.

In particular, the main analysis is whether North Korea can drop the drop at a certain point of its choice.

Considering that garbage balloons have been dropped in the presidential office in Yongsan, the government office in Seoul, and the National Assembly, the possibility of North Korea using balloons with GPS for attack cannot be ruled out.

[Kim Yeol-soo / Director of Security Strategy at the Korea Military Research Institute] It may not be a big problem for a garbage balloon to simply get there, but inside the balloon's envelope, for example, a bomb or a chemical (if loaded)....]An official from

explained that even if North Korea uses GPS, it will have limitations in overcoming weather conditions such as wind direction, but it is continuing to track the possibility of developing balloon flotation technology.

The total number of trash balloons sent by North Korea since May amounts to 6,000 in South Korea, and it is highly likely that provocations will continue in the future.

As a result, the military is paying keen attention to unexpected damage.
