The annual "Sheep Mall" event in Madrid, Spain, has been canceled amid the spread of "bluish disease" that turns black and, in severe cases, kills cows, sheep, and goats.

The city of Madrid said it has decided not to hold its annual 'herd migration festival', which was scheduled to be held on the 20th.

A new variant of the recently spreading bluish disease has not yet been discovered in Madrid, but a city official explained why the event was canceled, saying, "We need to limit the concentration and movement of livestock."

Every year, Madrid hosts a 'mob-herding festival' in which flocks of sheep fill the city center.

It originated from the tradition of herders flocking from northern Spain to the warm southern grasslands in winter, and was revived as a festival in 1994.
