Government Support Budget for Cloud Transition to Cut by More Than Half

As the legislation of artificial intelligence and AI laws was delayed, the government decided to establish an AI safety institute first and take the international stage.

He emphasized that he will also create a cloud ecosystem dominated by foreign big tech companies such as Amazon, and the problem is the budget.

Professor Jeffrey Hinton, father of artificial intelligence research in the 21st century, warned of the dangers of AI as soon as he received this year's Nobel Prize in Physics.

[Jeffrey Hinton / Nobel Prize winner in Physics] I think the government can encourage large corporations to invest more resources in safety research. The effort must be at least 1% (of what is being devoted to improving AI capabilities).]

The UK, the US, and Japan have already established AI safety research institutes at the national level to prepare for technology misuse.

Although the AI Basic Law has not passed the National Assembly yet, the government has decided to establish a safety institute first.

If there is no institution in Korea to verify AI safety, it should be evaluated for safety by overseas institutions, because it takes a long time and there are concerns about technology leakage.

[Song Sang-hoon / Head of Information and Communication Policy Division, Ministry of Science and ICT: The institute will be a new organization affiliated with ETRI, and the office will be set up at Pangyo Global R&D Center to recruit excellent human resources and cooperate with AI companies and related organizations]

The '4th Cloud Computing Basic Plan' was also released in connection with AI semiconductors and data centers.

Amazon is dominating Korea's cloud ecosystem, and overseas big tech companies, including Microsoft and Google, account for more than 75% of the market.

In 2015, the world's first cloud law was created and used by public institutions, but the private cloud utilization rate is still around 11%.The government's budget for the

cloud transition has been reduced by more than half compared to the first time, and it seems that the transition is not easy due to the form of intensive support for several places.

[Jang Ki-chul / Director of Internet Promotion Division, Ministry of Science and ICT: It is correct that the amount is decreasing. That's right, but in order to focus on the targets we support and things like this, we can increase the ratio from 1,000 to 20 million won to 6,000 to 8,000 won.]

The government said that 400 billion won in the budget for building a 'K-Cloud' ecosystem passed a preliminary feasibility study, and that it will create a domestic AI semiconductor market from the public sector.
