The U.S.-Japan North Korean Human Rights Conference was held for the first time at the U.S. State Department, involving high-ranking officials from South Korea, the U.S. and Japan on the subject of North Korean human rights.

Unification Minister Kim Young-ho called the meeting an important first step, saying that the Camp David summit realized its commitment to strengthen cooperation to promote human rights in North Korea.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell stressed that only through close cooperation between South Korea, the U.S. and Japan can respond to human rights issues in North Korea.Japanese Ambassador to the U.S. Shigeo Yamada
said, "It is deplorable that human rights violations continue in North Korea," criticizing North Korea for continuing to invest in nuclear and missile development at the expense of residents' welfare.
