The first lawsuit over the case has been filed in the United States, with one person killed and 49 people hospitalized for E. coli from McDonald's hamburgers.

CNN reports that Eric Staley, who ate McDonald's quarter-founders hamburgers and was treated for E. coli infections for several days, filed a lawsuit in Illinois court, where McDonald's headquarters is located, citing product liability and negligence.

The lawyer responsible for Staley's lawsuit said he was acting as legal representative for at least 10 E. coli victims.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently said 10 U.S. states have reported cases of E. coli infections in people who ate McDonald's QuarterFounder hamburgers, and that E. coli variants that can cause serious illness have been detected.

As a result, sales of quarter-founders have been temporarily suspended in Colorado, Kansas, and Utah.

CNN said McDonald's has not issued a position on the lawsuit.

Earlier, McDonald's stated that its hamburgers are safe, saying it has taken measures to stop using food ingredients that have caused E. coli infection.
