The National Police Agency announced today (5th) that it signed a business agreement with the Korea Transportation Safety Authority and the Non-life Insurance Social Contribution Council to support pedal malfunction prevention devices for safe driving of elderly drivers.
The pedal malfunction prevention device limits acceleration when the vehicle is driving at a low speed of 15 km/h or when the accelerator pedal is pressed hard or running faster than the road speed limit.
In addition, acceleration is limited when the engine speeds exceed 4,000 revolutions per minute.
With this agreement, the police will select a pilot operation area for the device, the Non-life Insurance Social Contribution Council will support the necessary budget, and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority will be in charge of analyzing business effects.
Police Commissioner Jo Ji-ho explained that the policy of preventing traffic accidents and guaranteeing the right to move for elderly drivers will be harmonized.
