Daegu City set up a statue of former President Park Chung-hee at Dongdaegu Station Square and held an unveiling ceremony.
The mayor of Hong Joon Pyo said that even though Daegu is a modernization-oriented city, there have been no related symbols, and that it is not only about former President Park's department, but also about honoring the achievements.
On the other hand, the Korea Railroad Corporation, which owns Dongdaegu Station Square, filed a petition for an injunction to stop the statue, saying that Daegu City installed it without consultation, which is expected to cause a legal dispute.
Civic groups are also predicting a hard-line struggle against the establishment of a statue of a dictator, saying there can be no such thing.
