Hwang Hee of the Democratic Party of Korea, a member of the National Assembly's National Defense Committee, said that 2,645 cases of sexual violence by female soldiers were reported to the military police from 2020 to September this year.

Looking at the number of reports year by year, it was 135 in 2020, but it has increased significantly to 366 in 2021, 673 in 2022 and 867 in 2023, and 604 reports have been received so far this year.

In a filing to Hwang, the Ministry of National Defense explained that sex crimes in the military have become public and female soldiers have been more active in reporting since Sergeant Lee Ye-ram of the Air Force made an extreme choice after he was sexually harassed in 2021.

Rep. Hwang Hee said he wants the military to pay more attention to women so that they can serve with pride in an environment safe from sexual violence.
