Police have requested an arrest warrant for a North Korean defector in his 30s who tried to cross the Tongil Bridge by stealing a bus to go to North Korea.

The security investigation unit of the Gyeonggi Northern Police Agency said it has applied for an arrest warrant for a man in his 30s on charges of violating the National Security Law and stealing a vehicle.

Mr. A was arrested yesterday (1st) at around 1 a.m. while stealing a village bus from a garage in Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do, and moving from the southern end to the northern end of the Tongil Bridge in Paju.

Mr. A ignored the restraints of a military sentinel and drove a bus and stopped only after hitting a barricade.

Mr. A is a North Korean defector who came to South Korea more than 10 years ago and reportedly stated that he committed the crime to return to North Korea due to difficulties in living in South Korea.
