The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has put the brakes on the project to select an alternative site for the Taereung International Skating Center led by the Korean Sports Council.

Yoo In-chon, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, told the National Assembly today (7th) that he thought it was impossible for the sports association to decide on a decision that would cost 200 billion won in state funds simply because it is a national training site.

Yoo noted that he could consider designating a competent department to solve the alternative problem or setting up an independent organization.

The KOC was scheduled to conduct due diligence on seven local governments that had applied for a substitute for the Taeneung International Skating Center in September, but suddenly suspended the process at the end of August.

Suspicions have also been raised that Lee Ki-heung, chairman of the Korea Sports Council, who is seeking a third term, may have put the decision on hold in consideration of votes ahead of the next election for the chairman of the sports council in January next year.
