Leaders of the European Union and 27 EU countries have called for urgent new legislation to speed up the repatriation of illegal immigrants to their home countries.

In a joint statement adopted on the 17th local time, EU leaders said, "We urge you to take decisive action by all means and tools, including foreign, development, trade, and visa policies."

However, the EU Commission president's proposal to establish a repatriation hub for migrants in third countries was not directly specified in the joint statement due to opposition from some member states.

The plan calls for transferring asylum seekers to temporary detention facilities in third countries, which international human rights groups have criticized as a de facto deportation measure.

In a joint statement, the leaders said they would respond to the instrumentation of migrants in third countries, including Russia and Belarus, and noted that "appropriate measures are needed in exceptional circumstances."
