U.S. media reported on the 19th local time that a massive power outage continued in Cuba, which is suffering from chronic power shortages.

In Cuba, a failure of a thermal power plant caused power outages across the country, including the capital Havana, on the 18th.

Power supply resumed in part on the night of the 18th, but was cut off again on the morning of the 19th, less than 24 hours later.

Authorities said they were struggling to restore it, but acknowledged it was not clear if they could fully resume power supply within the weekend.

At the height of the energy crisis, Cuba began emergency measures to reduce electricity use, ordering general businesses unrelated to the manufacture of daily necessities to stop production and closing schools and cultural facilities.

Cuba has suffered repeated blackouts due to a lack of fuel supply and demand due to aging facilities and economic difficulties.

Power generation is almost dependent on eight thermal power plants, most of which have been built for nearly 50 years but have not been properly maintained.

Another problem is that it is difficult to import crude oil due to the lack of foreign currency and economic difficulties caused by U.S. trade sanctions.

Cuba has been struggling to overcome its energy crisis, including a decision to expand solar power facilities as its oil supply, which had been provided at low prices in Venezuela, has also been reduced, but has yet to achieve any significant effect.
