Last month, the number of employed people aged 60 or older topped those in their 50s for the first time.

According to data from the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and the National Statistical Office, the number of employed people aged 60 or older reached a record high of 6,749,000 last month, up 272,000 from a year ago.

For the first time since 1982, the number of employed people in their 50s has surpassed that of those in their 50s.

Last month, 23.4% of all employed people aged 60 or older also ranked first in the entire age group.

At the same time, the number of startups for the elderly was also on the rise.

Among start-up companies in July this year, 14% of them were founded by people aged 60 or older, the highest ever as of the same month.

The Small and Medium Venture Business Institute said, "As the population ages, the number of elderly people in the labor market will grow," adding, "As it is also intertwined with youth employment issues, it is necessary to approach it in terms of extending employment rather than extending the retirement age."
