Myung Tae-kyun, who caused controversy over illegal nomination intervention, is suspected of manipulating poll numbers to favor President Yoon Suk Yeol during the presidential election.

A complaint was also filed to the prosecution to conduct an investigation into this, and the statute of limitations is expected to be the key.

Reporter Kim Chul-hee reports.

Myung Tae-kyun is suspected of manipulating public opinion polls through Kang Hye-kyung, an employee of the Future Korea Research Institute, ahead of the last presidential election.

In the recordings released through the media, Myung also instructs the number of respondents to pop more than three times, or arbitrarily adjust the young response rate so that the candidate's approval rating at the time of Yoon Suk Yeol is higher than that of the rival candidate.

[Kang Hye-kyung / Former Future Korea Research Institute employee (last 21st): When instructing me, there was an instruction to 'touch the data a little bit, manipulate it'.]

While Changwon District Prosecutors' Office is investigating allegations that money was exchanged between former lawmaker Kim Young-sun and Myung regarding the nomination, a civic group has separately filed a complaint with the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office over allegations of "public opinion manipulation."

manipulated poll data to get a favorable result for the election of the Yoon Suk Yeol president, and the president and his wife condoned and assisted such manipulation.

The statute of limitations for the election law is only six months, but the president also argued that the investigation is possible as the statute of limitations stops at the beginning of his term.

The prosecution, which allocated the case to the department in charge of election crimes, plans to first consider whether the statute of limitations remains and then decide whether to proceed with the investigation.

In response, experts say the possibility is open in principle, but

[Jo Joo-tae / Attorney: If the statute of limitations is suspended and prosecuted against the president, it is natural to prosecute an accomplice according to the general rule of law..]

Considering the purpose of shortening the statute of limitations, it is pointed out that additional legal review is necessary.

[Son Young-hyun / Lawyer: The purpose of the Public Official Election Act itself is to end it quickly and prevent confusion due to election failure or invalidity. There is room for contention as to whether we should be punished then after 5 years in office....]

Mr. Lee claims that he only ordered corrections for the wrong parts, and that there was no manipulation of the polls.

Attention is focusing on whether the prosecution's investigation will continue amid controversy over Myung's alleged involvement in nomination and manipulation of public opinion polls in the presidential election.
