Among the inhabitants of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, which disappeared after the eruption of the Vesuvius volcano, it was revealed that there was no blood relationship between those known as family ties.

In a paper published in the scientific journal Current Biology, a research team composed of scientists from the United States, Italy, and Germany said.

Analysis of the DNA of bone fragments from a model made by pouring plaster into the empty space of the Pompeii victim's body revealed that all of the people who were originally known as parents and two children were male and had no blood ties to each other.

In addition, another plaster model, which was believed to be a mother-daughter or sister relationship because the two were hugging each other, confirmed that one of the two was male.

The researchers evaluated, "This discovery confronts the long-standing way of linking jewelry with femininity or interpreting physical intimacy as an indicator of biological relationships."

It added that in the past, Pompeii restorers may have manipulated the model's posture and position to give fossils a narrative.
