The UK has raised its greenhouse gas emissions target to 81% reduction compared to 1990 by 2035.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer made the remarks at the United Nations Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Convention in Baku, Azerbaijan, on the 12th local time.

Starmer said meeting those goals was essential to Britain's economic growth and energy security, and urged other countries to set bold targets.

The target set by the previous government was a 78 percent reduction.

The UK has reduced emissions by nearly 50% compared to 1990.

Members of the Paris climate agreement must submit their latest reduction targets by February next year.
