The White House says the Justice Department must have loyalty to the Constitution and the rule of law in response to the voluntary resignation of Matt Gates, a nominee for justice secretary nominated by President-elect Donald Trump.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stressed at a briefing on the 21st local time that she has a consistent position not to comment on the president-elect's decision or appointment first.

At the same time, President Biden has said the Justice Department should be independent when it comes to investigations, saying there should be no partisanship and no loyalty to certain parties.

Spokesman Jean-Pierre's comments are interpreted as an intention to criticize Trump, who has faced several criminal prosecutions during the Biden administration, for naming Gates, his closest loyalist, as attorney general, and then signaling a major retaliation against officials from the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation under his wing.

The spokesman also said the Justice Department should be loyal to the Constitution and to the rule of law, adding that he believes President Biden has also set an example on the issue.
