The Mexican government, which has vowed to respond immediately if the next U.S. administration imposes tariffs, weighs the possibility that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's "tariff threat" is a bargaining chip.
Mexico will win over the U.S. when the two countries put tariffs on each other, and the U.S. needs trade with Mexico very much, Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard said.
In fact, Mexico overtook China as the U.S.' largest trading partner last year in terms of trade volume, according to statistics from the Mexican Ministry of Economy."Trump may also be aware that tariffs are taxes related to large U.S. companies operating in Mexico and will lead to a surge in inflation," Ebrard affirmed.
"What Trump really wants is negotiations, not realization of tariffs," he said, stressing that he is optimistic about the prospect of talks between the two sides starting soon.
