Heavy snow fell in Seoul and other central regions for the second day.

Snow bombs approaching 50cm in some areas,
Let's take a look at the causes and prospects of the unusual snow bomb with our reporter
.

Kim Min-kyung is in the YTN weather and disaster reporter studio.

Let's find out overnight first, and it snowed quite a lot last night, right?

[Reporter]
Yes, I prepared a radar video that shows the movement of snow clouds from yesterday's rush hour until 9 a.m. today.

Do you want to see?

From the northwest, snow clouds continued to flow into parts of the central and southern parts.

In particular, in the central part, long clouds continued to come in all night, reminiscent of the rainy season.

[Anchor]
Since the night before yesterday, snow bombs have poured down.

The place where it accumulated a lot was close to 50cm?

[Reporter]
Correct.

Baekam-myeon, Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do, is 47.5 cm, and snow has accumulated close to 50 cm,
More than 40cm of snow accumulated in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province, Gwanak, Seoul, and Jincheon, Chungcheongbuk-do.

The official observation station in Seoul, which was recorded as the first heavy snow in November in 117 years, also recorded 28.6cm.

[Anchor]
By the way, why did you get more rain in Gwanak-gu even though you are in the same Seoul?

[Reporter]
Yes, Gwanak-gu has a high altitude of about 141m.

As the ground is high, even in the same Seoul, the lowest temperature this morning was minus 0.1 degrees Celsius in Seoul, but minus 0.8 degrees Celsius in Gwanak-gu.

When snow is in the form of "wet snow" like this, the difference in the amount of snow can widen even in such a slight temperature difference.

[Anchor]
Let's also look at the causes of the overall heavy snow.

[Reporter]
Yes, it was the 'wrong meeting' between the cold low pressure and the hot ocean. If you go back

further, it's because the upper atmosphere is 'blocking', that is, because the air flow is stagnant.

That's because the low pressure kept spinning in place like a cogwheel, sending very cold air down to the north below minus 30 degrees.

The problem is that the cold air sent by this low pressure passed through the relatively warm West Sea.

The red color on the left side of the graphic is a place where the sea level temperature is higher compared to the average year, and the darker the color, the greater the difference.

Currently, the temperature in the West Sea is 15 degrees, which is about 2 degrees higher than usual.

But the temperature of 1.5km above the atmosphere is about minus 10 degrees, so
The difference between the temperature of the atmosphere and the temperature of seawater in
is as large as 25 degrees.

The larger the temperature difference, the stronger the cloud,

The cold air keeps coming down, and as it passes through the relatively warm West Sea, strong snow clouds continue to enter our country and pour heavy snow.

[Anchor]
Usually, when it snows, the area near the mountains of Gangwon-do always seems to have fallen the most, but this time it was concentrated in the west, such as the metropolitan area or Chungcheong-do, why is that?

[Reporter]
I'll take a look at the diary, too.

It's 5km above the atmosphere.

This yellow and red round mass is a low pressure that stagnated in the northern upper layer of Korea.

The drooping part toward Korea is called a valley, so it is expressed as a 'gol'.

Clouds develop well around here,

The reason is that this goal was located in the metropolitan area and near Chungcheong Province from last night to this morning.

[Anchor]
The snow piled up and the damage of the collapse continued, and it's a problem because of the fallen leaves?

[Reporter]
Correct.

Do you remember that there was a lot of wind right before it snowed?

Due to strong winds, maple and ginkgo leaves fell, and as rain or snow fell without being cleared throughout the walking path, the fallen leaves were frozen and snow was added, making it more slippery.

Even in alleys and pedestrian paths where the sun doesn't set well, there are still many places piled up, so you should walk carefully not to fall when walking on the street.

[Anchor]
I have to be especially careful with snow piled up on trees and signs?

[Reporter]
Yes, there is a picture captured on YTN Disaster Reporting System Y-DAS CCTV this morning.

Snow piled up on the car speed limit sign.

It looks like it's over 10cm.

Since this snow is a heavy and easily lumped "wet snow", if the accumulated snow starts to melt in the sun, it is highly likely to fall into a lump.

If a lump of snow falls on the windshield of a vehicle driving in the middle of the road, it can momentarily block your view and lead to a major accident.

[Anchor]
The most curious thing is, how long is this snow coming?

[Reporter]
Yes, I think everyone is most curious about this part.

Let's look at the radar screen.

It's definitely a big difference from the radar I saw a while ago.

Now, cloud bands fall to the east a lot and are scattered only in Chungcheong and other places.

Most of the Seoul metropolitan area will see snow in the afternoon, while some parts of Chungcheong and Honam will see snow until tomorrow.

It will lull for a while tomorrow morning, and then snow will fall once more during the day in various inland areas such as the metropolitan area.

The atmospheric congestion has been resolved, but the remaining troughs are expected to temporarily affect it once,

Thankfully, most of the snow will be 1 to 5 cm during the day tomorrow, which will be significantly less than yesterday and today.

[Anchor]
I was nervous on my way to work today, how about on my way home from work and tomorrow morning?

[Reporter]
Yes, even if most of the snow stops, I'm worried because the temperature is low.

Even in the middle of the day, it is 3.3 degrees, and the temperature is not very high.

In cloudy areas, the sun's influence is small, so the snow cannot melt much.

On top of that, if the temperature drops again from the evening, there is a high possibility that the melted snow will now freeze as it is.

That's why I need more attention on my way to work tomorrow than on my way home today.

Highways and large urban roads with high traffic and good snow removal work will be fine, but special attention should be paid to sliding accidents in bridges, tunnel entrances, and alleys.

[Anchor]
I heard that the scariest thing is 'road thin ice', but you can't even see it with your eyes?

[Reporter]
Correct.

Road thin ice is a phenomenon in which melted snow or rain turns into thin ice as the temperature suddenly drops.

There is an analysis that it is 14 times more slippery than the usual road and 6 times more slippery than the snow.

In particular, road thin ice is hard to see, so you should check frequently to see if the road reflected in the car headlights is shiny.

Rather than applying the brakes at once, it is a little more effective to apply them lightly multiple times at regular intervals.

I used to wear short sleeves only two weeks ago because it was hot, but now it seems like the season is overshadowed by the snow bomb in the cold?

[Reporter]
September, October, and November are usually called fall.

Just looking at November alone, the record is enormous.

Even though it was November, the highest temperature in Seoul rose to 25.1 degrees in early November, but yesterday the highest temperature was 1 degree, and within a month, the temperature was more than 20 degrees.

In the beginning, water bombs reminiscent of the rainy season of more than 200mm were poured into Jeju, and now it is no exaggeration to say that they have experienced four seasons in a month, including snow bombs.

[Anchor]
All the causes are due to the increased sea temperature?

[Reporter]
Correct.

First of all, the Jeju water bomb at the beginning of this month was indirectly affected by Typhoon 'Kongrey'.

This month, for the first time in 30 years, four typhoons were active at the same time in November.

This is because the sea temperature in the western Pacific Ocean, where typhoons develop, was high until November, making it a good condition for typhoons to develop.

Record-breaking summer heat waves, tropical nights, late heat that extended to Chuseok, and this snow bomb are all attributed to the increased sea temperature.

[Anchor]
But actually, the difference between 1 and 2 degrees in temperature doesn't feel real, but the difference between 1 degree and 1 degree in seawater temperature is big?

[Reporter]
Correct.

Ordinary sea water temperature increases by about 7% when the temperature increases by 1 degree.

It does not mean that the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere increases by 7%, but that the capacity of the water tank in which the atmosphere can contain water vapor increases by 7%.

Increasing water vapor means that there are more materials in the atmosphere where clouds are formed.

In addition, there is an analysis that when the sea temperature increases by 1 degree, the wind speed of the typhoon increases by about 32 kilometers.

[Anchor]
Lastly, since it was heavy snow from the first snow, I'm worried about the winter that begins, but Samhansaon has become an old saying?

[Reporter]
Correct.

Usually, when we think of winter in Korea, three days are cold and four days are warm 'Samhansaon'.

But I think it's a word that doesn't fit anymore.

Last winter, it was very cold in the beginning and then warmed up, and from the middle of the year, it was cold as the Arctic cold wave lasted for about 10 days.

It was so-called "9han11 On."

This winter is also expected to have a long repetitive cycle.

In fact, this cold continues for nearly 10 days until next week, and after that, there is a possibility that another cold spell will fall south at the end of this year after similar weather to normal temperatures.
