Roads and air traffic have been put on alert, with heavy snow warnings issued across the northeastern part of the country's biggest holiday, the Thanksgiving holiday.

The U.S. National Weather Service issued a heavy snow warning for the southern coast of Lake Erie and the eastern coast of Lake Ontario on the 30th local time, and predicted that the maximum snowfall would reach 120 cm by December 2.

Parts of Ohio on the southern coast of Lake Erie also predicted snowfall could reach 150 cm by Tuesday, December 3.

Heavy snow in the Northeast closed some sections of the highway connecting Pennsylvania and New York, and some areas, including Ferrisburg, south of Buffalo, New York, saw snowfall of nearly a meter.

The heavy snowfall is feared to cause further damage as the largest number of people ever travel by road and other means for Thanksgiving, the most traveled in the United States in a year.
