The United Nations has appealed to the international community to join the emergency relief effort, predicting that the number of people around the world will exceed 300 million next year.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on the 4th local time, "About 305 million people around the world will become people in need of humanitarian aid next year," adding, "To solve this problem, global solidarity is required and bold political action is required."
About 123 million migrants have been displaced due to armed conflicts around the world, OCHA said. "The destruction of communities and the collapse of food systems amid the climate crisis are also fueling the humanitarian crisis."
The OCHA pointed to a shortage of relief funds and noted that the humanitarian crisis has intensified in the last decade amid various disputes and natural disasters, but the relief funds raised by donations have not kept up with the demand for relief.
The OCHA set a $47 billion, or 67.3 trillion won, target for next year's fundraising and said, "This target will be used first to bring together more than 1,500 humanitarian agencies to help 190 million people in urgent need."
"The number of activists killed this year due to armed conflicts at the relief site has exceeded last year's figure of 280, and humanitarian agencies have played an important role this year by providing food, housing and medical services to 116 million people," OCHA said.
