The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the 27th high-level meeting of the Northeast Asia Environmental Cooperation Plan (NEASPEC), a consultative body between six regional governments to discuss environmental cooperation in Northeast Asia, was held in Beijing, China, for two days from the 12th.

Launched in 1993 under the leadership of Korea, the Northeast Asia Conference on Environmental Cooperation is the only comprehensive intergovernmental environmental consultative body in the region for cooperation on environmental issues in Northeast Asia, with six member countries: Korea, China, Japan, Russia, Mongolia and North Korea.

Five countries, excluding North Korea, participated in the meeting, and more than 40 people, including the headquarters of the U.N. Asia-Pacific Economic and Social Commission (UNESCAP), attended.

At the meeting, the member countries reviewed the five major areas of cooperation, including air pollution, conservation and biodiversity, marine protected areas, low-carbon cities, desertification and land degradation, and assessed NEASPEC's role in promoting environmental cooperation in Northeast Asia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the meeting was designed to contribute to maintaining and strengthening regional cooperation for solving and improving environmental issues in Northeast Asia and to shape cooperation such as building a knowledge-sharing platform.
