Acting People's Power Party Chairman Kwon Sung-dong said the Democratic Party will hurry to appoint three vacant constitutional judges, and he said acting president Han Deok-soo cannot appoint constitutional judges until the decision to impeach the president.
During the floor meeting, acting president Kwon said, "The acting president can appoint a constitutional judge when the president is vacant, but he cannot do so when he is suspended from office."
At the time of former President Park Geun Hye's impeachment, the Democratic Party criticized Acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn's exercise of the right to appoint constitutional judges as undermining democracy, and pointed out that the current pace of the Democratic Party's appointment of constitutional judges is a 180-degree change from past claims.
He stressed that the current absence of constitutional judges is due to the Democratic Party of Korea, which refused to negotiate between the ruling and opposition parties.
