Yamanashi Prefecture, which introduced tolls on Japan's Mount Fuji hiking trails this summer, plans to double the fare from next summer, the Yomiuri Shimbun and the Asahi Shimbun reported on the 19th.
Yamanashi Prefecture has decided to raise the toll for hikers to 4,000 yen (about 37,480 won) next year, which was introduced this summer, and plans to hold a briefing session soon.
The toll is collected separately from the 1,000-yen Fujisan Conservation Cooperation Fund, which was voluntarily received by hikers, and was set at 2,000 yen this summer.
Yamanashi Prefecture initially considered raising prices to between 3,000 and 5,000 yen, but decided to keep pace with the nearby Shizuoka Prefecture considering imposing a 4,000 yen "entry management fee," the Yomiuri Shimbun said.
Yamanashi Prefecture plans to expand the travel time of the 5th ridge of the trail, which was set from 4 p.m. to 3 a.m. this summer, and from 2 p.m. to 3 a.m. next year to curb excessive mountaineering.
Mount Fuji, which spans Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures in central Honshu, opens its hiking trails to the summit for only about two months each year from early July to early September.
Yamanashi Prefecture, in particular, is the most popular hiking trail used by about 60% of hikers on Mount Fuji. It has jurisdiction over 'route'.
