French President Emmanuel Macron was booed by some residents during a visit to the French island of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean, which was badly damaged by the cyclone "Chido."

President Macron visited the flood site on the 19th local time, five days after the cyclone hit Mayot, to inspect the damage and promise to restore and rebuild.

At the meeting, some residents strongly protested that the restoration work was slow and shouted "Resign" and "blat."

President Macron has decided to extend his visit to Mayotte by one day in consideration of the situation on the ground.

The French Interior Ministry counted 31 people killed and 2,500 injured in the cyclone, but local authorities estimate the actual death toll could be in the hundreds or thousands.

Mayotte, next to the island of Madagascar in southeastern Africa, is the poorest part of France's territory, with three-quarters of the population living below the national poverty line and relying heavily on French financial support.
