The ginkgo tree in Bangye-ri, Wonju, Gangwon-do, designated as a natural monument, is more than 1,300 years old, a survey showed.
The Wonju Historical Museum said it requested the National Institute of Forest Science to measure the exact age of the ginkgo tree and analyzed it to be 1,317.
The ginkgo tree was estimated to be 800 years old when it was designated as Natural Monument No. 176 in 1964.
The ginkgo tree, which is 32m high and 16.27m high, has a wide branch, giving a sense of grandeur and creating a spectacular scenery, especially during the maple season, attracting visitors one after another.
The National Institute of Forest Research explained that it was difficult to directly extract wood pieces from ginkgo trees, a growing natural monument, so it used the tree's height and circumference database and measured the receipt with digital growth information using LiDAR scan surveys.
