More than 1,500 Mozambicans escaped prison for 'spreading election protests'

More than 1,500 prisoners escaped from Mozambique, where nationwide protests reignited due to the controversy over the "unfair election" of the presidential election.

On the 25th local time, 1,534 inmates escaped from a prison about 15 kilometers from Maputu, Mozambique's capital.

Mozambique Police Commissioner Bernardino Raphael said 33 people were killed and 15 wounded when inmates clashed with prison officers during the breakout.

It added that it had arrested about 150 of the escapees in a search operation backed by the military.

The jailbreak comes amid renewed protests against ruling party candidate Daniel Shafu after his victory in Mozambique's presidential election was confirmed.

Earlier on the 23rd, when the Mozambican Constitutional Committee confirmed the victory of the ruling party's Frelimo's Shafu in the presidential election, opposition parties and supporters protested.

More than 130 people have been killed after two months of unrest before the latest cyclone hit and the protests were suspended.
