Professional golfer Ahn Sung-hyun, who was handed over to trial on charges of pocketing billions of won in illegal fees to list cryptocurrency on the virtual asset exchange, was sentenced to prison and arrested in court. Ahn is the husband of group Fin.K.L member Sung Yu-ri.
The Seoul Southern District Court sentenced Ahn to four and a half years in prison this afternoon (26th) on charges of violating (fraud) and violating the law on the aggravated punishment of certain economic crimes. In addition, he ordered the confiscation of two luxury watches he received during the solicitation process.
Former Bithumb Holdings CEO Lee Sang-joon, who was also indicted, was sentenced to two years in prison, a fine of 5,0025,000 won, and businessman Kang Jong-hyun, who requested a listing, was sentenced to one and a half years in prison. Song, a coin issuer official, was acquitted.
The court said, "Even though transparent and sound asset transactions are required, solicitation undermines the fairness and transparency of the market," adding, "It also seriously undermines investors' trust and can cause enormous damage to good investors."
In particular, Ahn pointed out, "Coin was not actually listed, so the results of the request were not realized," but added, "I received a luxury watch worth 400 million won in collusion with Lee Sang-joon, and the crime is poor because I deceived Kang Jong-hyun."
According to the prosecution, Ahn and Lee received 3 billion won in cash, two luxury watches worth 400 million won and 11.5 million won in luxury restaurant membership cards from Kang and Song.
Ahn is also accused of stealing 2 billion won separately by deceiving Kang, saying, "Former CEO Lee asks for 2 billion won in request for listing quickly."
Lee received about 44 million won in luxury goods, including 30 million won in luxury bags and high-end clothing, from Kang, according to the survey.
An and former CEO Lee were put on trial on September 8 last year without physical detention. Kang and Song were also indicted without detention on charges of re-appropriation of trust.
Meanwhile, Ahn debuted as a professional golfer in 2005 and served as a standing military coach for the Korean national golf team from 2014 to 2018. She married Sung Yu-ri, a former member of the girl group Fin.K.L, in 2017 and has twin daughters. On January 1 this year, Sung Yu-ri expressed her indirect position on Ahn's charges on her SNS, saying, "I sincerely pray that the truth about the unfair and hard work that our family is going through will be revealed."
