National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-sik criticized acting President Han Deok-soo's delay or refusal to appoint a constitutional judge elected by the National Assembly as unjustifiable.
After the approval of the appointment of three candidates for the Constitutional Court at the plenary session of the National Assembly, Chairman Woo said that Han should fulfill his responsibilities in accordance with the Constitution, laws, and common sense of the people.
He then pointed out that the president's appointment of three of the nine constitutional judges elected by the National Assembly is a formal and procedural process, and it is difficult to make an excuse for the ruling and opposition parties' agreement on the appointment according to the procedure.
He also said that even though the act of appointing a constitutional judge was not the subject of discussion between the ruling and opposition parties, Han's request to agree on it effectively means that he will not appoint it and violates the National Assembly's right to elect a constitutional judge.
