The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which tracked the origins of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) under President Joe Biden's direction, has concluded three years ago that the virus was artificially created in a laboratory.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on the 26th local time, citing Dr. Jason Bannon, who was in charge of the FBI's investigation at the time.
Earlier in 2021, President Biden ordered each U.S. intelligence agency to investigate the origins of the COVID-19 virus.
Since then, the National Intelligence Commission (NIC) and four intelligence agencies have concluded that the theory of spontaneous transmission of the virus from wildlife to humans is valid, but the FBI has been in the opposite position.
"The FBI was the only agency that determined that the virus had leaked from the lab, and the reliability of that judgment was moderate," said Dr. Bannon, who has studied biological weapons at the FBI for more than 20 years as a microbiology expert.
Dr. Bannon explains that the FBI tried to report this conclusion to President Biden, but was excluded from the White House briefing of the National Intelligence Service (DNI), which oversees U.S. intelligence agencies.
The fact that U.S. intelligence agencies excluded the FBI's conclusion from the White House seems to be related to the atmosphere in the scientific community at the time.
President-elect Donald Trump, who was sitting during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, claimed there was "evidence that the virus had leaked from laboratories in China," but only caused political controversy.
In particular, the medical journal The Lancet published statements by some scientists that defined the virus's lab leak as a "conspiracy theory."
However, one of the scientists who wrote the statement was confirmed to be a member of a research group affiliated with the Wuhan Virus Research Institute in China, which is suspected of being a virus spill site.
WSJ explains that there are scientists from U.S. intelligence agencies who have determined that the coronavirus was artificially manufactured and leaked in addition to the FBI.
Three scientists from the National Medical Intelligence Center (NCMI) under the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) concluded that the virus was created in a laboratory through genetic analysis.
Part of the spike protein that allows viruses to invade human cells was manufactured with technology introduced by a Chinese scientific paper published in 2008.
Their findings were also not included in the White House briefing.
In a related development, the WSJ introduced that it was Adrienne Keane, a State Department member, who led the preparation of the report for the briefing at the time.
Keane, who holds a Ph.D. in infectious diseases, served as an advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO), which announced that the virus had been transmitted from bats to humans via other animals.
Keane is also said to have strongly supported the theory of spontaneous generation in the process of writing the White House briefing report.
Dr. Bannon, who is now retired from the FBI, said of the origins of the COVID-19 virus, "we need to revisit the evidence that was cut in the course of the White House report by U.S. intelligence agencies in 2021.
