Jeffrey Hinton, a professor at the University of Toronto in Canada who is called the "Godfather" of artificial intelligence (AI), once again warned about the dangers of AI.
According to the Guardian on the 27th local time, Professor Hinton appeared on BBC radio and expressed concern that the rapid development of AI technology could pose a threat to humanity's survival.
He said the pace of technological change is "much faster" than expected and diagnosed that there is a 10-20% chance that humans will become extinct within the next 30 years due to AI.
He has argued in the past that technological advances have a 10% chance of catastrophic consequences for humanity, which has increased the grim probability figure.
"Human beings have never dealt with anything smarter than ourselves," Hinton said. "How many cases are controlled by something less intelligent?"
"There are few such cases," he said. "The only example I know is that a baby controls a mother with the power of evolution."
He also predicted that humans are only infants compared to very powerful AI systems and that "we will be like three-year-olds."
When I first started researching AI, I didn't expect it to develop this fast, Hinton said. "Most experts believe that smarter AI will be developed within 20 years, which is a very scary prospect."
At the same time, he urged the government to regulate technology, saying that the pace of technology development is much, much faster than he expected.
"It may not be enough to leave it to large corporations seeking profits," he said. "The only way to force large corporations to do more research for safety is government regulation."
Professor Hinton received this year's Nobel Prize in Physics in recognition of his work in establishing the foundation of AI machine learning.
He has been called a "pioneer" in AI and even served as a vice president at Google, but since breaking up with Google in April last year, he has publicly warned about the dangers of AI and has also been called a "whistleblower."
He said he left Google to freely warn of the bad effects AI will have on humanity and has warned that he should also be concerned about the risks of AI soon overtaking humans and getting out of control.
