Acting President Choi Sang-mok arrived at the scene of the accident at Muan Airport in Jeollanam-do at around 1 a.m. and began commanding the scene.
In the afternoon, we plan to preside over the accident-related countermeasures meeting for related ministers.
Earlier, Choi visited the Central Disaster and Safety Situation Room at the Seoul Government Complex at around 9:50 a.m. to direct the settlement.
He instructed the acting Minister of Public Administration and Security, the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the head of the fire department, and the head of the National Police Agency to make all-out efforts to save lives by mobilizing all available equipment and personnel.
He also emphasized that special care should be taken to prevent secondary safety accidents such as firefighters from occurring during the rescue process.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has also begun to deal with the accident in earnest.
For now, we have closed Muan Airport and are conducting a probationary work with the surroundings under control.
Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Park Sang-woo held a briefing at 1:20 a.m. and announced measures such as the operation of the accident headquarters, alternative flight measures for international flights, and safety measures for other airlines and airports.
Joo Jong-wan, head of the aviation department at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, held a second briefing and outlined the accident, saying two of the 181 passengers were rescued, and 85 were confirmed dead.
Two Thais were among the passengers, and the victim was placed in a temporary morgue inside Muan Airport.
A local accident management headquarters, headed by the head of the Busan Regional Aviation Administration, was set up at the scene of the accident and began to recover the scene.
It said 723 people, including investigators, the Korea Airports Corporation, police, fire fighting, and local government personnel, were deployed to the
site to deal with the situation.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport previously set up a central accident response headquarters at the Sejong Government Complex at 9:30 a.m. and dispatched seven investigators from the Aviation Railroad Accident Committee, the chief of aviation technology, and supervisors to the site.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport later said it plans to hold an hour-by-hour briefing in principle as soon as further developments are confirmed.
Separately, Korail, the Korea Railroad Corporation, has decided to run a temporary train linking Seoul and Mokpo to help deal with the accident.
The temporary train leaves Seoul at 3 p.m. for Osong, Iksan, Naju, and Goa, and plans to come up in reverse order from Mokpo at 8:30 p.m.
