Widespread flooding across central Europe has claimed the lives of at least 19 people and forced some 24,000 to flee their homes in parts of the continent.

Countries including Germany, Hungary and Austria have seen the worst flooding in generations, following a higher-than-average rainfall in May which caused rivers to overflow banks.

Some 23,000 people were told to evacuate in the east Germany city of Magdeburg on Monday, after a dam burst on the River Elbe.

River water levels have begun to recede in some parts, however, analysts say the damage caused will equate to tens of billions of euros.
