2.2. Earthquake Near Gilju, North Korea...Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) 'Natural Earthquake'

A 2.2 magnitude earthquake struck near Gilju, North Hamgyong Province, North Korea, at around 3:33 p.m. today.

The epicenter of the earthquake is about 39 km north-northwest of Gilju, North Hamgyong Province, with a depth of 7 km.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, Gilju, North Korea, is near where nuclear tests have been conducted in the past, but this earthquake is analyzed as a natural earthquake, not an artificial earthquake, and the shaking caused by the earthquake is weak enough to be recorded only in seismometers.

Natural earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 or higher near Gilju, North Korea, have already occurred 15 times this year alone, including this one.
