The case of an 18-year-old widow burned to death 37 years ago in India is again controversial.

The BBC reported on the 20th (local time) that "the incident of a woman who died 37 years ago at the age of 18 has recently come back to the surface in Indian society."

In September 1987, Kanwar, who lived in Rajasthan, India, climbed a pile of cosmetic firewood the day after her husband died. It was because of 'sati', a tradition of forcing a wife to die in the event of a husband's death. The etymology of 'sati' means 'quiet wife', a bad practice derived from Hindu rituals in the past.

Villagers testified at the time that Kanwar did not commit sati voluntarily, but that her husband's family anesthetized her and pushed her into a pile of firewood. Kanwar tried to escape from the pile of firewood, but armed guards standing by reportedly pushed her back into the fire pit. Later, her brother-in-law lit a pile of firewood and buried Kinwar next to her deceased husband.

As the incident became known to the world, the 'Sati' evil practice emerged as a problem, and within a month of the incident, the Indian government enacted the 'Sati Prevention Act'.

Later, some of Kanwar's husband's family members were arrested, who claimed, "Kanwar marched through the village in bridal suits, climbed a pile of firewood on his own, and burned, chanting religious spells next to her husband's body."

The case was re-publicized after 37 years on October 9 (local time) when all eight defendants were acquitted and released after a long trial. "No evidence has been found against them, so they have been acquitted," lawyers for the eight defendants told the BBC.

In response, activists from social groups sent a letter to the governor of Rajasthan, asking "the government to challenge the high court's 'not guilty ruling' and prevent the evil law of Satira."The justice minister of Rajasthan state

said, "We have not received the ruling yet," adding, "We will review the judicial response after review."
