"One Million Dollars If Signing" Musk Controverses 'Illegal Campaigning'

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who is supporting Republican candidate former President Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential election, has been embroiled in an illegal campaign controversy.

The New York Times reported on the 20th local time that Musk's recent proposal for a "$1 million winning opportunity" to encourage conservatives to register voters in Pennsylvania, a contested state, is illegal.

Musk has pledged to randomly select one Pennsylvania resident each day to sign a petition supporting the First Amendment, freedom of expression and the Second Amendment, and the guarantee of gun ownership rights and give $1 million.

The problem is that Musk put up "voter registration" as a qualification to sign the petition, which U.S. law defines as an act of ticketing to exchange money for voter registration or voting.

It would not be a problem if Musk gave the entire petition signatory an opportunity to draw without setting any conditions, but it is illegal because he put the condition of "voter registration."

However, some argue that Musk's proposal is within the legal limits of what the current law prohibits is only an act of exchanging money for voter registration, and signing petitions is not illegal.

In addition to the $1 million draw, Musk has been paying $47 (about 63,000 won) per signatory to anyone who has encouraged him to join the petition in seven competing states, including Pennsylvania.

Recently, we decided to raise the compensation to $100 (about 137,000 won) and pay the signatory along with the solicitor.
