After the parliamentary conflict, the number of medical students who joined the military as active-duty or social service personnel, not public health doctors, has increased significantly, and it has been argued that the public health system needs to be improved.
According to the data received by the Korea Public Health Doctors' Association from the Military Manpower Administration, 1,194 medical students and 139 social service personnel joined the army by October this year.
The number of military leave of absence students who are not public health doctors has remained in the 100 range since 2021, but it has increased significantly this year.
The Council of Public Affairs cited the inefficiency of the system, including punitive military service periods, and the government's lukewarm attitude toward resolving the medical crisis as the cause of the increase in active military service for medical students.
The council then stressed that the existence of the public information system is under threat and that the system should be improved, such as shortening the period of military service.
