A black male inmate was killed in a mass assault by prison guards at a prison in New York State.
Videos released by New York State's correctional authorities show prison guards kicking or punching inmate Robert Brooks on the 9th, and no other prison guards around him stop anyone.
Officials explained that Brooks was handcuffed at the time of the assault and had only been transferred from another nearby prison hours later.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has ordered the firing of 14 people, including prison officers and nurses, who participated in the assault, and state prosecutors plan to investigate prison officials for administrative oversight responsibilities.
Brooks was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead the next morning, and the first autopsy revealed that the cause of death was cervical compression asphyxiation.
Brooks, who died, was charged with stabbing his lover to death and was serving a 12-year prison sentence for a plea deal.
