Chung Geun-sik, a single candidate of the progressive camp, was elected in the by-election of the Seoul Superintendent of Education, and he will lead the education of the city for the next year and eight months.

Chung emphasized that he will brighten the future of Seoul through education that fosters a fierce sense of history and cultural and artistic sensitivity.

Voters ruled in favor of progressive candidate Chung Geun-sik in the by-election, which was held due to the loss of Cho Hee-yeon, former superintendent of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education.

In the midst of the two-way structure of progressive and conservative, the progressive camp gathered in a complete unification at the last minute and took the lead early on.

As a result, progressive education over the past decade has continued to be vital.

[Jung Geun-sik / Seoul Metropolitan Superintendent-elect: This election was an important moment to choose the future of education. Your choice will be the first step in changing Seoul education and taking Seoul education to the next level.]

Voters have strengthened the way to supplement and improve vulnerabilities while maintaining the current framework, rather than making sweeping changes such as the revival of elementary diagnostic evaluation and the complete abolition of student human rights ordinances.

As the superintendent of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, Chung first emphasized that he would focus on returning to the budget for free high school education and correct history education.

[Jung Geun-sik / Seoul Superintendent-elect: (Many) have said a lot that distorted history should not be taught. So, we will do our best to prevent distorted historical consciousness from sticking to our elementary, middle, and high school education field.]

It also promised to create an environment where children can expand their creativity, cooperation, and autonomy.

President-elect Chung will start his term immediately and lead Seoul education for about a year and eight months until the end of June 2026, but there are many tasks ahead.

It is inevitable to consider that the turnout was low at 23.5%, and it is expected that the city will compete with the city council in the process of inheriting former Superintendent Cho's core policies such as innovative schools and student human rights ordinances.

On top of that, there is a possibility that it may be at odds with the government's education policy, so resolving the conflict that arises in this process is considered a difficult task.
