In an urgent question at the National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee attended by Justice Minister Park Sung-jae, the ruling and opposition parties argued over whether President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of emergency martial law constitutes a rebellion.
The ruling party lawmakers argued that public pressure should not affect the judiciary's judgment, saying that declaring martial law was an inappropriate decision, but that it should be approached carefully whether it constitutes a riot, one of the requirements for establishing a rebellion.
Opposition lawmakers, on the other hand, argued that the incident was a clear civil war and a military revolt, saying, "Is it right to defend the situation with high legal knowledge when the president sent martial law troops to the National Assembly to break down the door?"
