Snowfall in some areas has reached up to 35cm amid the first heavy snowfall in a decade.

Hundreds of traffic accidents were reported in each state, and major highways were closed one after another.

Thousands of flights were also canceled due to major disruptions in flight operations.

While several states have declared a state of emergency, there has also been a hoarding of daily necessities.

Following a snow storm, a strong cold wave strikes.

Meteorological authorities have predicted that the polar vortex, which surrounds the Arctic cold spell, will sag southward, leading to a prolonged period of extreme cold.

In some areas, the mercury is expected to drop to minus 18 degrees Celsius and the southernmost part of Florida is expected to stay below zero.

There are also concerns about large-scale blackouts in the cold wave.
