At least 73 people, including women and children, were killed when Israel bombed several homes in Beit Lahia in northern Gaza, Hamas said.
A senior Hamas health ministry official said Wednesday that dozens of people were missing or injured in addition to the deaths.
In response, the Israeli military said it was confirming the reports, but that initial investigations showed Hamas had exaggerated the figures.
The Israeli military has claimed that Hamas' announcement does not match the information it has obtained.
