A senior U.S. government official has said that high-bandwidth memory, a key semiconductor needed for artificial intelligence development and produced by South Korean companies, should be supplied to the U.S. and U.S. allies, not China.

Deputy Commerce Secretary for Industrial Security Elon Estevez told the South Korea-U.S. economic security conference in Washington that the success or failure of a new battlefield will depend on advanced technologies, and that China should not secure advanced technologies that threaten the security of the U.S. and its allies.

In particular, two out of three companies that make HBMs that are essential for AI are South Korean companies, emphasizing that they appreciate South Korea's cooperation in developing and using their capabilities for the needs of the alliance.

HBM is a high-performance memory made by stacking several DRAMs vertically, and is the memory needed to operate AI accelerators.

When asked by reporters after the event about HBM export control, Jeong In-kyo, the head of the trade negotiation division, said, "We cannot say anything when nothing has been confirmed," adding, "The U.S. authorities are asking us to consult."
