A Chinese restaurant owner accused of working 14 hours a day for three years for a severely intellectually disabled person and exploiting a large amount of wages was sentenced to prison in the first trial.

The Seoul Central District Court sentenced Cho, in his 60s, to four years in prison on charges of fraud and violating the Welfare of Persons with Disabilities Act.Mr.

is accused of not paying KRW 90 million in wages to Mr. A, a severely intellectually disabled person in his 50s, from January 2021 to October last year after ordering him to clean and pack the restaurant six days a week for 14 hours a day.

He is also accused of failing to file a tax return by withdrawing 15 million won, including basic and disabled benefits paid to A and transferring the cost of the customer's food to A's account.

The court explained that Cho has not repented of his actions, such as frequently swearing at A and showing a violent attitude.

Mr. A has been working at another Chinese restaurant run by Mr. Cho's own brother since 2018, and has been found to have a severe intellectual disability due to brain damage caused by carbon monoxide poisoning.
