EU, UK start to improve 'Brexit discord' relationship... 'strengthen strategic cooperation'

Britain, the European Union and the EU have begun to improve bilateral relations, which have been strained since Brexit.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a joint statement issued after a meeting at the EU headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, on the afternoon of the 2nd local time.

In a statement, the two sides stated that they highlighted their mutual commitment to the full and faithful implementation of the Brexit agreement and the trade cooperation agreement.

"We have agreed to speed up the related agenda, starting with defining areas of strengthening cooperation that can be beneficial while fully respecting each other's internal procedures and institutional privileges," it said.

Commission President von der Leyen and Prime Minister Starmer agreed to meet once more within this fall and hold regular EU-UK summit talks early next year.

Starmer's visit to the EU headquarters came three months after his inauguration, and Starmer, who had previously supported Britain's stay in the EU, has vowed to "reset" relations with the EU since winning a general election in July.
