said North Korea was identified building new submarines in Sinpo, South Hamgyong Province, and that the submarines appeared to be larger than existing North Korean submarines. An official from
explained that it is still in the early stages of construction, and the exact tonnage will only be identified if the work progresses.
The military reportedly judged that the submarine under construction by North Korea could be a "nuclear-powered submarine" mentioned by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in September last year.
Although North Korea is not considered to have key equipment for nuclear-powered submarines such as nuclear reactors yet, it is believed that it may be a nuclear-powered submarine considering the size of the submarine larger than the existing model.
In September last year, Chairman Kim Jong-un announced his plan to build a nuclear-powered submarine at the unveiling of the "Kim Gun-ok Hero Ship," which he claims to be a tactical nuclear attack submarine.
