Prosecutors have demanded a prison sentence for a woman in her 50s who killed her young granddaughter and injured her grandson while suffering from schizophrenia.

The 11th Criminal Department of the Daejeon District Court (Chief Judge Choi Seok-jin) continued its decision process on the morning of the 17th after conducting a trial preparation date for A (54) accused of violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes. The prosecution demanded 20 years in prison and sought medical care.

Earlier on August 12 last year, A was put on trial after being accused of beating his granddaughter, 3-year-old B, and pressing her face with a pillow to kill her. A is also accused of committing physical abuse, such as biting his grandson.

It is known that A had been receiving treatment for schizophrenia since 2011, but had voluntarily stopped taking drugs seven months ago.

A's lawyer explained, "The defendant suddenly received a request from his eldest son to take care of the children and thought that he would only have to look at them for a few days, so the situation became difficult and the defendant had to raise them."

He also said, "Please give leniency considering that he was mentally and physically weak at the time and his mental health condition seems to have affected him, and it is difficult to contact his eldest son, the father of the child, or ask for an agreement."

A admitted all the prosecution's indictment in court and stated in his closing argument, "I was out of my mind and I'm sorry."
